10 year anniversary trip to The Spot?
« on: August 02, 2009, 14:17:41 »
First, what you may or may not already know about The Spot:

The Spot (GC39)
Placed: 05/26/2000
N 42° 40.088 W 077° 20.086
  • The first cache placed in New York state, ever.
  • The second oldest active cache east of the Mississippi.
  • The fifth oldest active cache (after GC30, GC12, GC28, and GC3E).
  • After The Spot, Central New Yorkers would have to travel at least 600 miles to find an older cache (in Illinois).

Now, here's the question and possible plan: This cache was placed May 26, 2000. For those not good with math, the 10 year anniversary will be on May 26, 2010. I was contemplating a group trip to visit the cache then. The problem is that the anniversary is on a Wednesday. So, either we could do the evening of Wednesday (Google tells me it's about a 2 hour drive for me) or we could cheat and celebrate by going the weekend before or after. I would invite the other regional groups to join us as well. I think many from Rochester would join us since it's not too far for them.

What do you think? Vote for any of the dates above or just vote No. Feel free to reply and give any ideas or suggestions you might have!

I placed my 50/50 vote already, but I'd like to point out that the weekend before is probably Memorial Day Weekend, which I'd rather avoid.  Then again, I'm guessing, so maybe the weekend after is.  I don't have a calender with that info yet.  Where pray tell is the "Spot?"  If it's far, then a weekend may be better, and could accommodate more people. . . just a thought.  Would people be interested in purchasing a commemorative patch?  Just an idea, but I may go with a "geocaching in CNY" patch instead.

The weekend before is ASP MEGA Event!!!!!!    ;D

The Spot is located in the Finger Lakes area South East of Rochester!!

I voted for Wednesday as it would be nice to have another day off from work!

Silly me. That weekend just won't work out, then :)
I have left it as a poll option, but have noted that it's ASP weekend.

FYI: I'm going to ask around in the other regional forums soon to see what others have to say.

I have not been to The Spot yet, but it is on my radar. I'd be potentially interested in a weekend event, especially if GPSfool is there as I'm interested in the early history of caching.

I still have not brought up this discussion with the other regional groups, but I plan to soon. To my surprise, there are more votes for having the event on Wednesday as opposed to having it on the Saturday or Sunday after.

If we do hold it on Wednesday, the question becomes: What time of day works for everyone on a weekday? Sunset that day is scheduled for about 8:20. Do we hold it early enough so people can leave and head to The Spot after they're done socializing? Or do we hold it later and give people the chance to do The Spot first during light hours and then head to the event at the end of the day?

Here's another question: The event will be at a "nearby" ice cream place. Should we just have the event there and let people visit The Spot if/when they want to, or should we try to include a visit (optional) to the site as part of the event? For instance, "X:00, meet for ice cream; Y:00, depart for The Spot" (or vice versa).

Why not have the event AT The Spot!  Say during 11 - 2pm.   That way for those of us who have to drive to get there will still be able to do the event.   Have the ice cream afterwards.

That's what I was asking about, in part. I'm not sure how much parking is there. Have you been there? Is it a road where people could line up along the road if the lot fills?
I wasn't planning on having the event there because I'm not sure about "the spot" that The Spot is in. It's not in a park where there would be picnic tables and people could hang out. It would mostly be people standing around in the woods and getting uncomfortable after an hour or so, dontchathink?

Haven't been there yet. But from what I've heard there are 2 parking lots.  The main one is at the bottom but there is an upper lot as well.   Don't know how many cars each one holds.   I'll ask around this week as I will be in Buffalo again cachin.

The lower parking lot is quite a hike to cache.  The upper lot has room for a dozen or so cars.   It's  3ths as crow flies to cache.  Just a beautiful area!!!!!   :)
It is what it is!

This is identical to what I have posted in Rochester and Buffalo and elsewhere.
