GROUP 07/25/09: Organizing a trip to BWT's Acrophobia
« on: April 15, 2009, 10:56:28 »
New to the site and want to discuss? You need to register (click here) first, then return to this page and ask any questions you might have!

I have had BWT's Phobia Series - Acrophobia on my watchlist for a year now. For those unfamiliar with it, this is a cache set up by BigWhiteTruck that is located on the side of a cliff. You can't climb down and you can't climb up: Rapelling is your only option! The cool thing about this cache is that BWT offers to take people to do the cache. He will train you and show you the ropes (pun intended) and then everyone takes a turn going down.

OK, I have contacted BWT and it looks like the date that works best is July 25. See below for details. Now that we have a date, I'd like to find out about how many people will be attending the event. Here is a form for you to fill out. Please fill it out once for each person who will be coming along. (If you are just coming to watch you can fill the form out, but mostly I would like to know who will actually be rappelling.)
Acrophobia "Will Attend" Form

The cache is about a 1 hr drive from Syracuse, depending on where you start and whether you go around the north or south side of the lake. The length of time on site depends on how many people are there. (We'll start at 8:00 and I'm guessing we'll go until about 1:00.)

And yes, this would clear the 2/5 grid for your Fizzy/Well-Rounded endeavours  8)

If your plans change and you need to change the dates you picked, you should be able to either change your vote or remove your vote and then re-vote with the new dates. Let me know if you can't.

I put in my vote for dates through the end of June.  I really don't know what my life will be like over the summer.  It doesn't mean I can't come then, but . . . it may be less convenient.  Also, I know I can't go on June 27th.

With 4 votes, June 13 is unanimous so far.

At some point, I've got to close the voting so I can e-mail BWT and try to figure out which dates are good for him. With June 13 looking the most promising so far, I figured May 6 would be a good date to close the voting. This will give people a few days to find out about the poll during the May 2 and have a few days to vote while still giving me a chance to contact BWT more than a couple days in advance.

If you haven't voted yet, please do so now! And if your summer plans have changed, feel free to update your vote.

Acrophobia: JULY 25
July 25

OK, I have contacted BWT and it looks like the date that works best is July 25 at 8:00 am. (It is about an hour drive from Syracuse). If you are able to join us in July 25, please post here (or send Novac an e-mail) and let us know that you plan on coming. It would be ideal to know how many people total will be rappelling so we can get an idea of how long it might take for everyone to go.

Do we all want to drive down separately, or do we want to caravan? I'm thinking that driving separately might work out best, which prevents those living east of Syracuse from backtracking and also allows some to cache their way there if they prefer. If anyone wants to carpool, post something here to that effect.

Any other questions?

Apologies to those who cannot make it. If all goes well, perhaps we can organize another trip with BWT in August for anyone who cannot do it on this date. That's one of the benefits of a group like this  8) But that's something we can discuss in July.

About six of did it last year. Got there at eightish and were done about 1. BWT does an EXCELLANT job teaching and helping everyone complete cache.  We took him out for lunch after in Skaneatles and had a very good time.  Please be sure to trade bugs as the cache doesn't get much activity. It is a dead spot for Coins and bugs.  Oh yeah, bring lots of cameras, prettiest cache I ever did!.  Captain Jon   :)
It is what it is!

It is over two months away, but that also means that you can clear off your calendar now -- write it in big marker!  8)

I guess I haven't looked at this in a while-oops.  June 13th or July 25th should both work.  I'm not sure if a date has been confirmed with BTW yet or not.

6 weeks until we head out for Acrophobia, which seems like forever but also zips by quickly in the summer months. So far we have 8 people officially signed up through the form with one or two verbal commitments. If you plan on coming along, please sign up and let us know so that we have an idea of how many people will be rappelling that day.

If you haven't already, please sign up on the Will Attend form so I can continue to keep BWT updated on our planned attendance:

Also, we are looking at going to lunch in Skaneateles afterward, probably at Johnny Angels.
