I found a Sapience Trek message that was posted to the Buffalo & Rochester forums. I figured I would post it here for everyone's reference since ST is our reviewer, too.

Lately I've been seeing a LOT of cache submissions at the edge of a private residence, such as on a street sign, in a ditch, in a tree on the street side of a sidewalk, in a fence, etc ... People often cite that the town has the "right of way" for a certain number of feet from the road. This may be true, but the public right of way is for the town to perform road or sewer maintenance, or to allow utilities to place or service electrical or gas lines. This does not grant access from the town or the property owner to use it for any purposes you see fit.

I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not going to pretend to understand property laws. I'm concerned with the perception of geocachers when they appear at the edge of somebody's residential property and start poking around in their trees, or fence, or rock wall, looking for a geocache. If you don't have permission from the home owner, please don't place a cache on their property. If you don't know who owns the property or don't know if it is public or private, why are you placing a cache there? Unlike commercial property like a Walmart parking lot which is open to the public and people are expected to be there, private residential property is not open to the public whether or not there are private property signs and what the public right of way laws are. While I'm sure everybody enjoys looking for a cache thrown into a ditch on private property, there are plenty of other scenic ditches around that don't have a property issue.

Note I'm speaking only for how caches may or may not be listed on geocaching.com; other listing services will have different rules and guidelines.

Novac,

Since you roam the other sites did you see my reply on "Who is Sapience Trek" is?  Makes you wonder is this person from Rochester/Buffalo area or Syracuse.

I generally assume ST is not from the Syracuse area, and I assume that with no reasons whatsoever. I also refer to ST as male for the exact same (lack of) reason.

Basically, I don't much care about who ST is. I just appreciate the hard work ST does. Keeping on top of so many submissions in such a quick timeframe has got to be time consuming. And listening to all the complaints for every cache that goes unpublished? I'll pass on that responsibility, too  ;D

I must admit, I do like Team GeoGriffin's "Dread Pirate Roberts" and "Mall Santas" theories.

Sometimes I wonder how the position changes the geocaching experience. Especially for multis and puzzles, you have already carefully examined each leg and have a "good" idea of what's ahead of you. That said, I have looked at caches on Google Maps' satellite view and been very surprised when I arrived on site.

I also wonder about when/if ST goes to events, if they hear people talking smack about ST. That would sort of be annoying, I'd think. :D

Yup - it's always interesting to hear people talk about me to my face.   Especially when outright lies are told about what ST told them.

Wow, that would be crazy. I am amazed that you keep your cool at those times. It must be really hard. I would guess for sure that you are not a talker, but a quiet person. I fer sure would slip up! :)

Is it not the case that both NewYorkAdmin and SapienceTrek ( former NY cacher ) have traded hands multiple times over history?  As one volunteer decides to "retire" as a reviewer, another person steps in, but using the same account.
On my honor, I will do my best...

There are many theories on the origins and identities of ST & NYA. Many people west of here have a lot of differing opinions on ST's identity.

I have a theory which I believe to be true, however I keep that theory to myself. :D

I really don't care who ST or NYA are. They have a tough job that they don't get paid for and for the most part they do a great job. No ones perfect and some toes are going to be stepped on from time to time. Just be glad that the job they do is getting done.

I have to agree with RJW on that one.  They get the job done, and they are flexible when we try to hold a Golden Ammo can so the honoree can find it first. .. thanks whoever you are!
