Geo Thief in Rome/Oneida county
« on: February 16, 2010, 23:14:12 »
 :)
WE CAUGHT THE GEO THEIF.    As Johfra and I were driving past one of my newly listed caches on the old air force base in Rome, we saw a man at the site.   We made a circle back around and drove to where his vehicle was parked.  As I stepped out of the van to take a picture or his liscense plate, he took off running into the trees.  We searched for him for awhile, and even saw him come around the back side of the building where his car was parked.  When we noticed him and headed toward him, he once again took off running.  The police were called.  A report was filed and a stake out of the vehicle commenced.  He returned to his vehicle  a short time later, only to be apprehended by the police.  We made a positive identification.  His vehicle was searched.  Log books from our caches and magnetic key holders, as well as lists of caches and their coordinates were found in his vehicle by the police.  When we left, they were taking him in a patrol car to the station to be prosecuted.  The charges probably won't stick, but we know who he is - PAUL REPAK -  he lives in the BOONVILLE area and works on base.  He will have to go to court and may even face other charges if they can get a warrant for his house.  This is no joke.  This really happened.  We got the bastard.

This is fantastic!!!

What were the charges that he was arrested on? This is an interesting topic as geocaches are left out in public and it's hard to argue ownership when it's not on your private property. This is a topic often discussed on one of the Podcasts that I listen to on geocaching. (podcacher.com)

Would you mind if I shared this story with the podcast? I will leave out names and keep the story general, but a cache thief being caught is excellent news!!!

I've already contacted a friend of mine who does write for several local newspapers (Boonville Herald, Rome Sential, UticaOD and The Griff.   Anybody want to get on WKTV to report this?

Great news.  Now maybe after 5 years of a caching void the Utica/Boonville area will be cacheable again.  Of course that is if he is the only one working the area and if he quits.  He may continue only being a little more careful.

Can we ask the police to search his property for a stock of stolen geocaches?

You know, the dumb thing is if he hadn't run and simply given an out of town geoname he would have gotten away without being found out.

So, when's the party and where?  Someone should throw up a geo event.

One more thought.  If there is a wordsmith among the group how about writing the story up and submitting it to Today's Cacher.  http://www.todayscacher.com/ .  I'll bet many who have had caches stolen have interesting stories to include in an article.  One that comes to mind is Blue Girl and her Prentice Falls cache.

So can I assume that this guy is the same guy who wrote this article on the Adirondack High Peaks website?

The police were asked if they could search his house and at the time of arrest, they were not sure there was enough evidence.  They may searched his house since then, but I have no idea.  A story was written and published in the Rome Daily Sentinel giving the guys name and what he was arrested for according to the police log.  It said he was charged with petty larceny and fifth degree posession of stolen property.  He was released after posting $100 bail and has to appear in court.

This is the articles written in the Rome Sentinel:

An electronics engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory was arrested Tuesday afternoon for stealing a trinket from a GPS-based game of hide and seek.

Paul L. Repak, 58, of Lewis Road, Boonville, stole a small magnetic case from its hiding place on the Griffiss Park at about 4:15 p.m., according to Detective Commander Timothy J. Bates. The case was hidden as part of a game called "geocaching", where people hide small trinkets in their neighborhood and then other players use the Global Positioning System to follow the coordinates and find the trinkets.

The point of the game is then to either put the trinket back or replace it with something new for other players to find.

"When the geo-thief takes a cache container and does whatever it is he does with it, all the swag, log book, geo-coins and travel bugs are lost forever," said local geocacher Carole Darling, of Kent Street. "The game is ruined for other players."

Darling said she hid the magnetic case two days ago on public property near the new sculptures on Griffiss, and was driving by the site Tuesday when she saw that someone had found it. Darling parked nearby to speak with the person, but when she approached him, he took off running into a nearby wooded area, police said.

"If you’re a geocacher, you don’t run," Darling said. Suspicious of the man, Darling said she called police because geocachers in the area have had a problem for years with people stealing the trinkets.

"Someone had been going around taking the items, the trinkets," Det. Bates stated.

When police responded to the scene, Bates said Repak’s car was still there. The officers staked out the vehicle until Repak emerged from the woods, and he was arrested after he was found with the magnetic case.

Bates said Repak is charged with petty larceny and fifth-degree possession of stolen property. He was released after posting $100 cash bail, and is scheduled to appear in City Court.

Repak is an electrical engineer in the Cyber Operations Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate, authorities said. Calls to the Air Force Public Affairs Office were not returned this morning.

No - but why don't you give him a call at his number 315-***-**** and ask him?

Admin note: Sorry, I hate to edit posts, but we really don't want to post other people's phone numbers, be it fellow geocachers or even geocaching thieves. --Novac
