New York Admin is aware of the situation and is looking for a way to find out what this guys geocaching name is.  Without his name there is no real way of preventing him from getting cache information.   Even if we had his name, what is to prevent him from signing up under another name?
Maybe New York Admin can cross reference to the person who "placed caches" around the NYGO picnic up in Fish Creek Pond then was never heard from again. I remember he said he was from Boonville orginally. I did some searching and the handle used was NYGEO.

Congrats to Kayleo and Johfra.
I am pleased to start geocaching and specifically trading geocoins and TBs in the Rome area again.
I guess we need a TB hotel now!   :-)

Maybe writing the Adirondack High Peaks website and telling them about the Thief who writes for them will ruin his GAME ;) !!!!!!
Include the Rome Sentinel Article . http://romesentinel.com/news?newsid=20100217-141107

Thanks Kayleo and Johfra.

I would not start leaving coins in the Utica/Rome area until we see if he is cowed by his arrest.  He may get off the charges, get his $100 bail money back and go right back out to thwart us some more.  I plan give it a few months before I place trackables in the area and see what he does.

I agree with LCSM.  I wouldn't assume that he isn't going to continue doing this.  Asside from further embarrassment if caught again I don't see there being anything to really prevent him from starting up again.  We don't even know why he does it.

Maybe when he loses his job due to a criminal record he can devote even more time to ruining our peaceful sport!

There is discussion about the Adirondak Traveler article going on here:
http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?s=f375bf007030ab788170d579e3fd774c&showtopic=242511
but without reference to current events.

Could someone who has a groundspeak forum account go straighten them out on the true identity of the author?

Also, does anyone know whether local cachers will be allowed to make statements at this guy's hearing?
On my honor, I will do my best...

This link doesn't talk about the Adirondack Traveler.    It talks about caching without a gps!!!

My mistake, the article being discussed is in the 'Adirondack High Peaks Forum' not the 'Adirondack Traveler.'  But this article was written by The Thief!

Here's the article:

as i stated in my log for the foot hills bell the best way to catch the thief would be to continue to replace caches and create new ones sooner or later the guy would be seen too many times at one site and would get caught.  for a long time now everyone said he worked at the base and having placed new caches right under his nose was to much for paul repak to ressist. the leave no trace arguement doesn't cut it for me as all caches are hidden and must be searched for litter and trash are left out in the open. this was the doings of a sick mind and I'm sure the stolen items were kept as trophies . Now after being caught the items may have been discarded. I know he owes me a few loc n locs and magnetic containers. the travel bugs and coins may never be recovered  but anyone who has missing caches or swag should have everyright to write the local paper ,his place of work and the local fire department of which he is a member .  If you read his ADK article he can see he shows a bit of distain for GPS usage but he had no trouble using one to plunder our caches. I made a point of chiding him in my logs and I hope for all our sakes he is done with this harmful and downright mean activity

How bout we orginaize a flash mob on his doorstep? 300 geeks and nerds blowing horns and ringing bells, now that would be sweet revenge.

Just heard from KayLeo and Jofra (the ones who caught the thief) that the Court date is March 2nd at 9 AM.

So, if anyone wants to come it's being held at the Rome Courts.

I haven't wrecked anything in quite a while-in fact, I've fixed and/or replaced several caches lately, at the request of the owners!  Gotta run though, there's a new cache out tonight-and it has a purple lid!  Yippee!
