So... is it fair to say that the bottom line is that other than the inconvenience of a couple days in court and a lawyer bill, he's getting off without punishment?

I think it's fair to say that the next 6 months will be wonderful caching in Rome :)

That's why I said "6 months", however in a case like this, I wouldn't say for sure that he would start up again. After all, if mass caches start to go missing again, who would be the prime suspect?

Novac, I have to agree.  Looking at what the judge said, my interpretation is that he is getting off with a very strong warning.  I assume that if he does it again in the future outside of the 6 months it will be treated as a new offense but they will go further.
