Getting the word out about Geocaching
« on: June 15, 2011, 18:34:51 »
So a finder for one of my recent caches noted that a neighbor came over wondering what she was doing. When people ask me why my legs are all scratched up or how I would have gotten poison ivy I usually just default to saying I was hiking, although not always acurate, because it takes to long to explain what geocaching is, well for how long most are willing to listen. Then the other question i get is why is there money in there? When I came home for the day my mom mentioned seeing that the Rochester Geocaching Community was going to be doing something for a public information kind of thing. Since I'm new to the area I don't know if this has been done or tried here. Seems like more people would not notice someone feeling up a tree or standing just off a trail checking every downed log if more people at least knew what geocaching was. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

Also, LCSM is doing the same thing in Fayetteville but without the smiley.

What did you have in mind beyond this?

Since I'm pretty unfamiliar with the area I'm not sure what kind of events there are out there that generally attract muggles that are outdoor based that might allow a booth or even just an information table. This winter in Rochester I attended "Winterfest" which is an all day kind of thing where there is tons to do some temporary caches were put out that people could go look for. EMS had a place to try snowshoes and cross country skis and that kind of thing. If there were an event like that this summer, hopefully without the snow, and we could get cachers to come out and just be there so people could ask questions. I had seen LSCM's event and actually forgot about it last night when I created this topic. I'm totally open to ideas and locations. I'd do my best, my work schedule is irratic right now, to make it to any event that got the word out. My recent troubles with getting a cache published in a parking lot of a WMA made me realize that if people don't understand geocaching getting areas to place them will be difficult.

I am holding a Geocaching 101 event at the Manlius Library on July 16th, that will be an event as well. . . I will invite cachers to come "teach their particular GPS" in small groups after the general introduction. MermaidB50's program is in Fayetteville on the 18th.

Well that gets the southern part of syracuse covered anyone in the North Syracuse Cicero area know of an event that we might be able to jump in on? It doesnt have to be right away but the more people who know about geocaching the more people wont think twice when they see someone lifting a lamp skirt or wandering off a trail or feeling up a tree.

For at least a couple years the Village of North Syracuse did some family geocaching events. I looked at their summer schedule and didn't see one on there this year.

The geocachers in Albany has a table set in one of the Library's out there one Saturday during the winter.

If people ask what you are doing just tell them " Your geocaching"   "It's a world wide sport/hobby high-tech using a GPS to find tupperware in the woods.  Once you find it you sign the log book and replace everything back the way you found it and go online to log your experience."    At this point the muggle asking will either say OK or I'd like to get in on the action.   I've gotten a lot of folks who have asked interested in geocaching this way.
