Author Topic: Rhode Islanders Headed to Syracuse  (Read 440 times)

Howdy from Rhode Island!

Some of my fellow cachers doubted me when I told them that they can get great BBQ in Syracuse (we've recently been to Mississippi and had great BBQ there). To prove them wrong, we are headed to the 'Cuse (I've eaten at Dinosaurs many many times!) for good eats and great caching.

We are all set for the eats (mmm.....BBQ), now we just need the caches. We are driving up on a Friday morning, caching near Syracuse, then eating some BBQ. Maybe hit Clark's Ale House for beer and a sandwich afterward. On Saturday we'd hit a few more caches before heading home.

We have decided to find "The Spot" near Canandaigua on Friday.  That means we have Friday night and Saturday morning free for caching.

We are looking for cool, unique, intersting caches to do while in the area.  We are considering caching in Green Lakes State Park (can pick up quite a few caches on a nice hike in a single location).  Are there any other caches we really need to visit?  Great views, "wow factor" hides, etc are all of interest to us.

Hi, BBWolf, thanks for dropping by! How soon are you coming around? October, or snowier times?

The Spot is definitely a good one, though I haven't been yet. (We are planning an event near there to celebrate The Spot's 10 year anniversary Smiley )

Green Lakes is definitely a nice area for hiking. I spend 7 hours there one day. Not sure if it's still tick season, but I have heard that ticks are a problem there. (I didn't see or find any on my visit.)

One quick and easy cache with a nice view of Syracuse is SuperViewofSyracuseaexpialidocious.

I've lived in Syracuse (and my wife is from the area)... it's always "snowier times" Smiley.  We are coming up 6-7 Nov.

Depending on when we get back into the city, we'll have to see if we can hit this one (we may not be back until late Friday after hitting "The Spot").

Any ingenious/clever urban hides?

Two caches that i highly recommend are in the Rochester area.
-Subway Cache GC6FBE
-The Orc's Treasure GC674E   I did this one twice.  Grin
Both are awesome caches!!

Near Syracuse is a county park-Pratt's Falls. Has several nice caches and the waterfalls. Here's a link:

Two local caches come to mind that were fun and challenging are:
"Surprise" GC17BVB and Glitterstrains GCRAXA

Well, we are back from our little adventure, and just wanted to share.

We left RI at 0700 Friday, grabbing the rest stop caches on the Mass Pike and NUS Thruway on the way up. Nerves was nearing 2100 finds, so we decided to get her to 2098 and then hit "Spook Hill" (Very cool!) and "The Spot" for the milestone. We were greeted by sunshine, blue sky and some nice puffy clouds. Although it was a brisk thirty-something degrees, it made for a comfortable walk to the cache. We loved the location, the walk, and the views. We took plenty of pictures at GZ and headed up.

Afterward, we stopped at a few caches on the way back to the Thruway, including a couple of fun ones at Hobart & William Smith College (and we got to meet the cache owner as he toiled away at his desk!). After BBQ, we grabbed a couple more urban caches nearby.

The next day we headed for Green Lakes, picking up about a half dozen. The walk at Green Lakes was very enjoyable, and I decided I need to come back withe the family for some camping. After that we started the drive home, picking up rest stop caches, and "Laura's Tower" near Lee, MA (that is a must do cache! Views are outstanding!).

The trip was fantastic...great times, great caches and great company. A trifecta! Thanks for all of the suggestions. Maybe the ones we didn't visit will be the seed for the next grand adventure!
