The last time i bought ammo cans i paid $6.99 for the .30 cal. They are now $11.99. The .50 cal is now $14.99 up from $8.99.
I have been checking flea markets to see if they are lower but no luck so far. Fleas are cheap  ;D ;D.

I think when I bought mine, the .30 cal was $8.88. So the price continues to increase. I have heard that .50 cal are $20 in WNY now  :-[.

I know that in some areas, they pitch in to buy pallets of ammo cans for cheap and/or sell the pallet out piece by piece. I assume this is strategically messy, however, since you have to be able to have the money, get someone to bid/buy the pallet, have someone to transport many ammo cans, have a large place to store them, and have a way to get them to buyers.

I'd have to check the groundspeak forums to see how much they actually save by doing that.

However i would not give him my card info, he needs to set up paypal, etc.
Price is good except freight may be the killer?

Actually, I was thinking more about the official government surplus auctions:
http://www.govliquidation.com/

Though for a "regular" person to buy them, your garage may end up looking like this guy's:

Just hope and pray that no one calls ATF on you :)

Mermaid and Cheryyll found them in Cortland, I think, near a bridge that has a cache on it, for $7.50 plus tax.  We also are expecting a supply to drive here from Chicago, but I'm not sure how much they will cost.  I bought 3. . .just waiting to hear the price.  I know I need one of them, but after that, I'm willing to sell at cost if someone wants one-I just don't know what the cost will be.

Here is the place:  http://www.surplusjoes.com/ (Cortland Army/Navy) Picked up a couple today. She has a good supply of .30 and .50 cal. ammo cans. The price is good till they are gone. A new shipment may mean higher prices.
Decon containers are hard to get, she seems to think the army stopped using them. bullseye1

I see there is an Internet auction on the Government Liquidation site Novac posted. On the block are three lots of ammo cans from Fort Drum. The bidding starts 12/15 and ends 12/17. It shows the original amount paid for the boxes as, $3.38 for the .30's and $11.88 for the .50's. Opening bids for each lot (pallet) is $150. I'm anxious to find out what the final bids will be for these items!  :o To view items enter "ammo cans" as keyword for search.

It would be a great deal...less than $2 per can if you get it for $150. I'm not sure what other fees end up being tacked on (taxes and who-knows-what-else).

Still, the biggest obstacle is transporting and storing them :)

According to a local supplier in my area, the reason for the price increase is the public is actually using the cans for what they were orginally intended. Storing ammunition.  John Q public is storing ammo in unheard of quantities.
It is what it is!

I know this is an old thread, and I haven't posted in a while, but I wanted to give y'all some new information.  A buddy of mine in the Rochester area has gotten himself a few pallets of ammo cans from government surplus auctions.  He repaints them, stencils "Geocache" on the side, and glues a laminated cache note to the inside of the lid.  All this, and you get them for $9 each, and he will usually deliver them to you.  He will even do gold, silver, and other personalization for an extra buck.  Now Syracuse is a bit down the road, so he may want to meet you half way, but you'd have to contact him and find out.  But heck, for $9 for an ammo can, ya can't beat that.  His name is Steve and his geocaching handle is c-fire, and he has a basic website at http://home.rr.com/n43w77geostore (the page still says $8 a can, but I am pretty sure he upped the price to $9 to cover gas money). Give him a shout!

I purchased a bunch of smaller containers from c-fire at ASP and also an ammo can to give away at one of my events. No complaints here!
