Bug Repellent
« on: April 06, 2010, 21:02:35 »
We have lucked out with all the warm days so far this year, they have given spring conditions a big boost. Unfortunately the little black flies will also be out sooner.
So what's everyone's favorite insect repellent? I have some Deep Woods Off (25% DEET), but often I don't use anything. Must have something to do with getting doused with the old classic OFF as a kid, nasty!  :-X Thick clothing works well, though ends up being too hot on warm days. Any tips to keep the all the flying and crawling biters away would be welcome!

Alas, I am among that tiny minority of the population for whom DEET is an irratant.  Even if I just put in on my clothes, it somehow sweats through and I end up with a burning sensation, and I can still breathe the the stuff and it burns my nose/ throat.

So for me, it is geraniol.  All natural (derived from plant oils), and reasonably effective.  Ironically, I understand that more people are allergic to this than DEET, but not me.
On my honor, I will do my best...

I'm with you, I use Deep Woods Off. As this will be my first full summer of caching, I'm thinking that long pants will be a good idea. I got lucky last year when I was learning the
game to not have ended up with PI or any bad bug bites. I don't want to press my luck for too long.

We use deep woods off with a deet of 40%.  I was able to find 100% deet at walmart.  We usually wear shorts and have pants ready to go in the cache van if needed and change when it will be needed.  So far we haven't had much of a problem.  ~jjrashford

Also you should be cautious of TICKS. Permethrin works well. Link for a place to purchase if interested:

Make sure you have a good pair of lightweight long pants, then. Effective against PI and such, not too effective against prickers, and less sweaty than normal pants.

Also you should be cautious of TICKS. Permethrin works well.
"One treatment will last up to six washings or six weeks before clothing has to be treated again" :O
"Effective against ticks that carry Lyme disease" -- does that mean it's worthless against ticks without Lyme disease?

I sport an attractive blend of "Eau d'Off" and whatever other bug stuff I may have in my cache bag at any time.  Apparently I am particularly enticing to mosquitoes and PI. . . so I also carry both rubbing alcohol and Technu, and if I even just suspect I may have had an encounter, I rub on a dose.  I'll report back at the end of the season-PI free since December!
