Stock up on film canisters!
« on: April 12, 2009, 23:40:48 »
I used to go to my nearby Wegmans to grab a bunch of film canisters, but a while ago they stopped processing film. Now when I go to a particular drug store with 1-hour photo, they tell me that they are no longer processing 35mm film or that they plan on dropping it soon.

I finally went to a non-pharmacy place and the manager I spoke with was dreaming about losing their 35mm machine.

So, we know that digital is the future (and the present, really) of film and photography. And that also means that film canisters will be a whole lot harder to acquire. What are your thoughts?

Last time I needed some i went to Walmart, if you ask them to save them they probably would.  The people at the one in fairmount are decent.  My gf use to work at Michaels she said they have them too for people to use for crafts, large bag for a few dollars.  She thinks she seen a bag at some of the $ stores too.

A few of the places I called or visited did mention that they saved them but that someone had just come in and collected them.  :(

Sometimes you can pick them up at events.  I know of one coming up in mid-May that usually has freebies at least they did in the last 3 years...    ;)

Make friends with a someone people who are diabetic and beg a few of their used test strip containers off them.  the containers are a bit smaller than a film can, have a water tight flip-top lid, and a little thing in the bottom that acts as a dessicant (i.e. water/ humidity absorbant material).
On my honor, I will do my best...

I have friends who run a retail film processing shop.  I asked them about cans, they told me I can have as many as I want.  If you all need some, I can get a bag full and maybe get them to dnnsgps to pass along at a future event.

Hmm, I'm trying to figure out if I have seen this type of container before. I'm not sure I would even know if I have because I don't really see diabetic equipment that much.

Ask and you shall receive:

They come with a label that is easily peeled off, and as you see, can be replaced with camo duct tape.  The white you see inside the one on the left is the dessicant material.

Donna, I have a bag of about 50 film cans, a mix of black and translucent ones.  Have to find a way to get them to you. Are you ever in Rome?

I still have quite a few left.  Thief has taken them all yet!   Rome is only 30 minutes away, maybe meet up and go cachin.  Still need to get a few caches up along the north side of Oneida Lake.
