Walking Sticks
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:48:26 »
I have had the "itch" to have my own walking stick, ever since I saw RANGER_21's stick, which he has had for years and has cone all over the country with it.  He carved it, then painted it with what I believe to be Testor's paint, and hammered a beer cap to the bottom.  While mine didn't have the same level of detail to it, I painted mine LIME GREEN to match the colors in Mountain Dew.  I did however dug out a spot towards the top for a TB tag.  Anyone that sees me "on the hunt" can log my TB!  The stick came from a sapling near one of Coterm's caches...

(If it fits in anything smaller than a Buick or larger than a grain of sand, we WILL hide it!  8D)

I made two sticks for myself, the second one is better. I took a fat shovel handle, used a "side grinder" on it to carve notches and swirls, then burned it with a propane torch. After all that I sanded the stick to bring the original wood color back but it left the notches and swirls black from the torch, then wrote our cache name on it in marker, then put six coats of urethane over the entire stick. I must admit it looks pretty cool.  My caching cohort  has a stick which I purchased from the Groundspeak store.

I bought my girlfriend a groundspeak stick for one of her Christmas presents and she loves it, more than the other gifts :)   I will NOT burn that one, its too nice looking. I don't know about other folks but on some hunts the sticks are a bit too cumbersome and we leave them in the car. Like the "walk in the basin" cache, too much hill climbing for the sticks.

I bought a beautiful one at the camp store in Letchworth park.
Nice cuts, some animal prints burned in, i think it was like $5, the sealer would have cost me that :)
Plus my handyness stops at carving stamps :)
