As I mentioned back in 2010, I also live in the Liverpool/North Syracuse area (near Wegmans on Taft).

What brand & model GPSr do you have? There are a few of us who can help out and/or point you to some good resources.

As far as events, we had an event in January but the next events aren't until May. (CITO at Sterling Nature Center on May 14; Highland Forest on May 21; & probably a 15-minute event at the Taste of Syracuse on June 4).

For a basic way to view upcoming events and recently published caches, go to the Hide & Seek a Cache area on the Geocaching site. Use the Seek a Cache by State/Province feature. Everything is listed in chronological order, so all the events are listed first, followed by newly published caches. After a while you get to know what cachers are from what regions, so it's easy to tell what's close to you. This doesn't hold true for all instances though, because you can host an event or hide a cache where ever you would like.
Oh, and ask all the questions you care too, no apologies necessary!  ;D

If you're a premium member you can (as I just realized recently) create a pocket query for events within a given radius of your location.

Also, I see there's an events tab on the Facebook group, but it doesn't have any future events on it.

Yeah, I have a pocket query where I set the dates from today through as far out as I can go (December 31 of the following year) and set it to show Events only based on my home coords and limited to 25 entries. This has the advantage that you can see them in order of distance from home (instead of having to view events down near NYC).

In order to do pocket queries like that, you need to have a premium membership.

As for the Facebook group, I usually just add nearby events but anyone can add whatever events they want...
