Garmin Etrex is an excellent series to start off with. Or just go for the Garmin 60CSX that everyone loves. I started out with the Yellow Etrex and then got the Garmin Ledgend and finally, moved on to the Garmin 60CSX. Another brand that some folks like is the Delorme series. Might want to check the sales out at Gander Mtn or Herb Phillipson's. I know Gander has gps'rs not sure about Herb P.
Do come to the event in Rome on May 16th. This would be a great way to learn about the different gps's that people use.
