CNY Travel Bug Race?
« on: May 20, 2009, 11:04:51 »
Is anyone interested in having a travel bug race? I was thinking we could have an event where all the TBs could "start" and then have another event when the event ends (a year later, perhaps?) to pass out any prizes or awards.

I am more than willing to facilitate the race, a race page, stats, and also the event...but I won't bother if there's not any interest out there. Let me know what you all think.

I guess we start once I'm convinced we will have suitable participation and once I can gather up some prizes to give away and once I am able to put together an event for it.  8)

OK, I think I'll go ahead with this race.  ;D

At this point, here are the ideas I have. Let me know if you have any ideas or if there are things here you don't like.

  • The TBs will all be brought to the "Start" event. From there, they will all be placed in a cache together, probably a local TB hotel. If there are too many to fit, they will be split among two or three local TB hotels.
  • The "race" itself will be to a pre-determined cache over 2,000 crow-miles away.
  • The race will end at the "Finish" event, and most prizes will be handed out to the winners there.
  • Prizes will go to the first 3 TBs to reach the destination. If less than 3 make it, there will be additional categories to determine the winners (mileage traveled, number of caches, etc.).
  • I have other prize categories in mind. At least one category will remain a secret until the Finish event. ???
  • All entrants must start at the event. If you want to join the race but cannot be there on the event date, it would be nice to have someone else bring the TB. Not sure if/how we will deal with late entrants.
  • None of the participants can move the race bugs, and no getting you friends to do it, either!  :o
  • TB dipping will not count if mileage/number of caches is a factor in awarding prizes. When a cacher places the TB in a cache, a different cacher must retrieve it.
  • Entrants must be new/fresh TBs. The first cache logged must be the "Start" event.
  • I am willing to provide identical informational tags describing the race so each TB is clearly identified as having a destination and a deadline.

I considered an entry fee that would go directly to actual cash prize money for the 3 winners, but since I really don't like entry fees, I won't be doing that. The winners will have to make due with whatever prizes I can scrape together and/or get from donations. We're doing this for fun and not profit anyway, right? :)

I think we'll run with a points-based system to easily clarify any ties. I'm thinking the winners will still be the 3 TBs that get to the destination first, which is easily accomplished by giving an outrageous number of points for arriving at the destination. But the points will help sort out the order for any caches that do not reach the destination.

I'm thinking about having the race start and end in July, but that's not set in stone yet.

Hmm, how about pushing it back to August 8 or 9? No NY events scheduled for August yet. I just have to figure out when my son's birthday party will be. Or maybe I could rent the pavillion out and use half the time for a bday party and half for the event. I wonder if I could get away with that . . .  ???

Looks like it might be July 19 after all. We got a break (free deal) on a spot for that day that normally costs $125. My apologies to anyone already planning on the Albany picnic.

Any thoughts on the wrap up date?  I'm requesting that it not be the weekend of July 17th-18th!
